Plot: Mild-mannered businessman Sandy Patterson travels from Denver to Miami to confront the deceptively harmless-looking woman who has been living it up after stealing Sandy's identity. Runtime: 111 mins Release Date: 07 Feb 2013
I love funny movies. Melissa McCarthy delivered. This is not a non-stop-laugh movie, but it has plenty of funny and hilarious scenes. There is a storyline, a plot; it is not continuous slapstick. It has serious moments, and sad moments -- it is bittersweet yet very, very funny. Eric Stonestreet gives a great performance as Big Chuck. His is a small part, and one not for children. Actually, children should not see this movie as there is some violence as well as the short sex scene with Big Chuck. In the end, the character played by Jason Bateman, Sandy, shows his true side, which is compassion <more>
and forgiveness and that, when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade -- don't give up; just start over. Melissa McCarthy is as funny here as in Bridesmaids. I am looking forward to The Heat, in which she stars with Sandra Bullock.
Outstanding Movie!!! Very, Very funny!! (by herbertbrown54)
Melissa McCarthy is flat out hysterical. This movie about Jason Bateman having his identity stolen is non-stop laughs from beginning to end. It is very heart warming at the end. Trust me go and see this movie if you feel like laughing. Melissa and Jason are two fine actors that play off each other well. And surprisingly there is also action in this movie too! The physical comedy brings back memories of classic comedies that preceded it. This sight of Melissa running from Jason is enough to bring tears to your eyes. Also, the mean bounty hunter is great! This is definitely the best comedy this <more>
year. If you like Melissa in other movies you will love her in this movie. Although the plot is simple it is very well executed.
Sooo disappointed by all the bad reviews (by aceofspeeds)
I watched this movie last night, I thought it was very neat! To all the people who say that the McCarthy character is intolerable: yeah, she is a little bitch, but that is the whole point. She is out of touch with reality somewhat, sly, mean, and a compulsive liar; she is PATHETIC, but that is the whole kicker. She reminded me of a little overweight wild animal, who, when cornered, dashes left and right and then bites you and tries to escape, but Sandy managed to "tame" her in the end. Anyways, the whole point of her is to be a little bitch, but given her background, that actually <more>
makes sense. Nobody ever showed her what is right and what is wrong, and she kept on lying and making up new identities for herself so she would not have to deal with who she really was. That is why she wasted all those moneys on booze for other people and some stupid junk that she decorated her house with. It did look at first that she really did not have a heart, but after hearing the daughter call her daddy on the phone, we see her break down and cry. I mean, I can relate to her in many ways and I feel that a woman like that might actually exist somewhere: wacky, cunning, lying cheating and stealing, but with some good deep in her heart and a deep need to be loved. The fact that many people hated her character is actually a compliment; I am sure that if you met her in real life, you would not be able to handle her. Melissa played her role perfectly, and the Sandy character was pretty good too, if a little dull, but he was supposed to be a wussy. The only thing I would've thrown out was those secondary characters, the bounty hunter and the gangsters, they were not really necessary and a bit "over the top" but then this was supposed to be a pretty lighthearted comedy so they did still fit in. To summarize, I think that people did not like it because: 1 Some of the credit card detail stuff did not make sense but people ARE actually so stupid in real life they would give you their identity information sometimes even without you having to ask them for it. Just read the notalwaysright website; a lot of those customer stories feature very very dumb real life people . 2 The Melissa character was a little bitch and some people just could not handle her being soooo obnoxious I found it hilarious . 3 The Sandy guy was a wussy and I guess some people do not like men being portrayed as such in films. 4 The movie was predictable in the sense that yeah, they made it home and bonded along the way. But so what? I thought that the character transformation/revelation was pretty neat. 5 The Melissa character was overweight and other overweight people did not like the weight issue as a part of a comedy. Grow up! 6 In general, people took the movie WAAAY too seriously, pointing out the inconsistencies, spoofs, etc. Who cares? This was supposed to be for entertainment purposes, not for a life-altering transformation or hours of dwelling upon it. Maybe you should go analyze "Airplane" and point out all the things that do not make sense in THAT movie hint: it would be all of them . So for everyone who said it was "the worst movie ever" and did not find it even a single bit funny. Grow up, really! You're taking life waay too seriously.
It was a lot better than I expected! (by cecilliawhite)
I was a little skeptical about this movie, as sometimes it seems like all the funny bits or scary in the case of a horror movie are seen in the trailer. Also, the mediocre ratings made me think that this was going to be just some mediocre film. Well, I can happily say that I was proved wrong. If you actually try to have a good time, you will. Don't get sucked into some sort of high standard that entitles you to not be able to laugh at goofy humor. Why would you even go watch a comedy movie in this day of age if you expected anything more than sexual persuasive / dirty humor? Bottom line, <more>
this is a really entertaining movie and had me laughing almost constantly throughout. Give it a shot and see what you think; you're sure to laugh at some point :
If this movie didn't have you laughing through the whole thing, you must not have a sense of humor. I went to see this last night with my best friend and we loved it. My husband and I are actually planning on going again next weekend In fact, our theater was sold out and you could hardly hear some things because everyone in there was laughing so hard. If you liked Due Date, Bridesmaids, I Love You, Man, The Change-up, The Hangover, etc, etc, you'll love this.I feel like when a movie comes out, a bunch of negative people get on here and think they have to trash it and talk about how <more>
"un-funny" it was just to make themselves feel cool. Comedies are not documentaries so get over it! If real-life things were that funny, people wouldn't need to watch comedies, they'd just watch documentaries. But they don't because they aren't. So yes, they occasionally through in an inept cop or an over-the-top character like in the Hangover to keep you laughing and interested. As long as it's well done which this WAS , there's no need to bash it. People pick apart how "unrealistic" little tiny things are and give a movie a bad rating for that. Lighten up, sit back, relax and let yourself have fun for a couple hours. I promise you will enjoy this movie if you do.The first 10 minutes were nothing special and there weren't really any jokes to be had because they are basically just setting the scene for you. But once Jason Batemans character finds Melissa McCarthy's character, it gets really going and you pretty much laugh until the end. I appreciated that there were a couple sentimental moments in there too. Yes, it is a lot of physical comedy not to be confused with slap-stick , but there's plenty of good jokes in there to keep you laughing too. To me, the timing was really spot on and didn't drag out the road-trip part for an eternity or leave any loose ends. I really loved the way they ended it too, though I won't say how. I think it was really well done and had everything I'm looking for in a comedy not ridiculously stupid like the "Scary Movie" type movies and not boring . I honestly can't wait to see it again next week.
One of the Best Comedies I've Ever Seen (by jpr-reardon)
Do not listen to others who may say that this movie was garbage or not good. I went to this movie with a few of my friends and the theater was packed. Melissa Was hysterical the whole entire movie and pardon my french she had me laughing my ass off to the point of embarrassment. The movie had a really good story-line, one that was original and new. Throughout the movie they added more and more characters so your mind didn't become bored of the whole entire situation and in the end it was a pleasing and satisfactory finish one that didn't leave you mad, sad, but happy and maybe even <more>
with a giggle. Please go see this movie i gave it 9/10 it was extremely funny don't listen to the critics these days they don't judge a movie by its awesomeness. That's my Job!
A Fun and Movie With a Good Story... (by bobbiphillip-605-331093)
If a movie can make me laugh AND cry, I give it an automatic 5 stars just for that. Add Jason Bateman and Melissa Mcarthy and there's a couple more stars. I added a star just because I think a lot of the poorer reviews were unfair to this really good movie! I am VERY HARD TO PLEASE when it comes to movies. I see a good 20 movies before I come to one that I can give more than 5 stars. We almost didn't go see this because of some of the more negative reviews... but I have to tell you, I was really glad I did go to see it! Great movie! Melissa was hilarious in her antics and Justin <more>
Bateman superb in his role as a straight laced business man. How he kept a straight face throughout the filming is beyond me! There were two parts where I cried... but I won't give anything away. The rest was just really funny. Go see this movie!
Bateman and McCarthy Funny Chemistry! (by ShelbyTMItchell)
A fun time movie as Jason Bateman is the perfect straight man with Melissa McCarthy stealing every scene she is in.As she plays a, you guess it...identity thief who steals everybody she gets her hands on everybody's IDs that she can. And really does not think and ignore the lives she is affecting. As Bateman's mild mannered family man character, is not just looking at jail time but also with facing the loss of his new job after he and some friends started their own company. There he finds out who McCarthy is and has one week to get her back from Fla to his hometown in Denver, CO. And he <more>
thinks that she looks harmless enough...well WRONG! As she proves more problems for him as he is at his wit's end and could lose everything. And plus there are more DANGEROUS thieves out for McCarthy and to a lesser extent Bateman.Still a great time and really Bateman and McCarthy make a funny couple as hope that they can reunite again for another funny movie.
Strange! Definitely not a great film. Good film... Yes!Jason Bateman is truly an actor one is compelled to watch... as is Melissa McCarthy. Enter Robert Patrick and this film can't be ignored.Identity thief has some great acting in it... if not the best writing. Playing a jerk for most of the film, Melissa McCarthy shows her range. I really hated her... so... she sure did her job playing a meanie.Jason Bateman, as in "Arrested Development," continues to play the character we love to love. But he always seems to get the raw end of the deal. We love to keep pulling for you Jason! <more>
Keep up the good work! Would love to see you in a comedy film-noir at some point.Identity Thief will never be a cult classic... but the work of the above actors will always be seriously remembered in this film!
